Narrative

executed by order of Gov. Overton
Ed Love killed a Negro, seemingly in self defense. Governor Overton sent Ed word to come to court and stand trial. Love sent him word to come and get him. Love was on the scout for 2 or 3 years. He stayed withhis brother Sloan Love who had recently married a Northern girl by the name of Nannie Lucas. Ed Love got tired of being on the dodge of the officers so he decided he would leave the country for good and stay away. Love was apprehended and returned to Tishomingo for a trial. Instead of giving Love a fair trail, the Governor ordered him shot at once. Without any preliminaries he was marched out in a ring made on the ground and three Militia all fired at the same time. The Governor set word to Love's brother and sister that they could come and get the body of Ed Love, and they did so.
Interview with R. L. Nichols in Indian Pioneer Histories, Vol. 96.
