Probably suffering from malaria he took strychnine, mistaking it for quinine.
Tucker [http://www.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1915225&id=I91525385] gives parent's names as John Potts and Mary Gillespie -- as do many, many others. For the moment, I'm sticking to the names my family told me, although accepting the bulk of Tucker's research.
Just to confuse everyone completely: There is a Joseph B. Potts listed in the "1860 Lands West of Arkansas" census. (This basically was a census of non-Indians living in the Indian Territory.) In Diane Gann's transcription [ http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgarvin/kinard/chickdistrict.html ] of the "Free Inhabitants in Chickasaw District Tishomingo West of Arkansas -- Post Office Arbuckle Indian Territory" we find the following people sharing dwelling no. 35:
Ellen Lawrence, age 35, Female, School teacher, born in New York /
S. Jane Johnston, age 29, Female, School Teacher, born in Massachusetts /
Joseph B. Potts, age 40, Male, Farmer, born in North Carolina.
There has been much discussion (in some on-line circles) of the accurate identity of "my" J B Potts. While I continue to maintain that the information my family passed down to me concerning my great-great-grandfather is correct, I present this fellow as an possible alternative.
